Why Is Pet Dentistry Important?

Periodontal (dental) disease is extremely common in dogs and cats. Many pets show signs of dental disease by age three. Bacteria in plaque and tartar cause inflammation and infection in the gums and around tooth roots. Left untreated, this can lead to:

  • Painful, infected gums
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • Trouble chewing or eating
  • Bad breath
  • Bacteria spreading through the bloodstream, which can affect the heart, liver, and kidneys

Keeping your pet’s mouth clean isn’t just about fresh breath, it’s about protecting their overall health and comfort.

Signs of Periodontal Disease in Pets

Be on the lookout for any of the following, especially in adult and senior pets:

  • Bad breath
  • Red, inflamed gums or a red line along the teeth
  • Hard yellow or tan tartar on the teeth
  • Missing or loose teeth
  • Dropping food or difficulty eating
  • Mouth sores or ulcers
  • Swelling around the face or jaw
  • Decreased appetite or weight loss

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a dental exam so we can help sooner rather than later.

Pet Dentistry at Montgomery Animal Clinic

If your pet is over three years old, there’s a good chance they already have some degree of dental disease. Our goal is to catch problems early, relieve pain, and prevent more serious issues down the road.

At Montgomery Animal Clinic, we recommend annual dental cleanings (COHATs – Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) for most adult pets. In-house, we offer:

  • Professional dental cleanings (scaling and polishing under anesthesia)
  • Full oral exams
  • Dental X-rays (radiographs)
  • Extractions when needed
  • Treatment for periodontal disease
  • Oral mass evaluation and minor oral surgery

For many pets, all necessary dental care can be completed right here at Montgomery Animal Clinic.
